Accusations: I saw you… (1994-1996)
Over the years my work has addressed various social topics but an overarching theme has been the act of witnessing. In the series Accusations: I Saw You…, this is most directly addressed. I have used the rebus- an image or images that stand in for a word or syllable. This device serves to engage the viewer and at first glance, the combination of the image, symbols and words appear whimsical and appealing. When the images and words are decoded a more serious message comes to light. As these brooches are worn, the wearer brings the “accusations” into the public sphere, and in doing so, strikes at random.
