Specimens

This series is the third, and final, iteration of my work with hand-painted photos of eyes and hands that are fashioned into butterflies, moths, and beetles.  In the first iteration, the series- Sensum/Sensorium, they were set individually like gems in jewelry settings (necklaces, brooches, rings).  Then as now, they portray images of actions associated with the senses of sight and touch. Here, they are collected in multiples that create comparisons within the (scientific) order or comparisons to others within the species.

It is important that they be recognized as specimens and not as romanticized depictions of “nature”. Thus, they are pinned, indicating that they function as objects for scrutiny.  In so doing, human interaction, mediated by the senses, is also scrutinized.
