Huesos Solitarios (2018)
The piece, Huesos Solitarios (Lonely Bones), is an intimate memorial to the people who have lost their lives crossing the Mexican/American border. Over 6,000 people died between the years of 2000-2017– more than died in the 9-11 terrorist attack and Hurricane Katrina combined.
This collection of bones and fragments are rendered in copper mesh and wire–then enameled. The labor in forming and hand-stitching these “bones” is slow and deliberate. For me, it is a meditation on, and commemoration of, this loss.
