SEWING SAMPLES (2015-present)
The body of work titled Sewing Samples is inspired by the humble activity (sewing samplers) once practiced by girls and young women. I have appropriated these techniques to create “samples” that refer to the body and its intimate nature. The bulbous bodily forms are often conflated with hyper-feminine ornaments such as ruffles, frills, and embroidery to create forms that are contradictory and, sometimes awkward. I am attempting to examine the liminal spaces between the clothed and the naked body. Each piece is hand-sewn of copper mesh then enameled with vitreous enamel. The surfaces are etched to look and feel like flesh.
